After Realism, France had an art movement called "Impressionism" that was in 1870 to 1900. Impressionism is painting that is base on observation. It has emotions and opinions on the art by playing around with the colors to show a message. Impression used a thin brush and natural colors. Impressionst artists made two different colors next to each other that affect each other to make different colors stand out. It's not blending which made the painting from far away look more realistic than being nearby. The process of developing Impressionism was art followed by similar styles became popular and got a place in a salon and in the media to spread it to the world. Later on the salon rejected Impressionist art because the painting became more loose, insulting, and so shocking. Also they thought the artwork was not finished. Napoleon III came up with the idea to make a Salon Des Refuses next to the regular salon where they could get people's attention on their painting and expand the artwork to the nation. The Salon Des Refuses got more viewers than the regular salon so the leaders of the Impressionist movement wanted more salons, but Napoleon did not allow them - he allowed it once but not again. After eleven years, the Impressionist leaders built their own salons from their own money, without getting support from the government. In order for the artist to publish their paintings they had to swear they would not join any regular public salon.
